The Connected Standby Microsoft proposes in Windows 8 is really really low power. Something even lower than current "sleep modes".
Likely the Mountain Lion version is similar. Though it won't be until Haswell we get that super low power Connected Standby. Right now with Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge its just idle mode + updates.

It's gonna have to have the cpu, memory, disks, buses, NICs powered on to do this, so they shouldn't call it a standby or sleep.IntelUser2000 - Monday, June 11, 2012 - link
