But can you watch Netflix and Vudu on it?
  • HStewart - Friday, September 29, 2017 - link

Yes if you click the link - it shows a list of what's is available.

I think the VP9 support means HDR on YouTube has a decent shot at working if they update the YouTube app. Dolby Vision and HLG (HDR formats) would be nice additions as I'm hoping they start broadcasting live sports at 1080p with HLG HDR. The SuperBowl was 720p SDR last year and it made my 4k HDR TV visibly sad.

you're supposed to leave the fire tv hanging like that of the hdmi port? they couldn't think of a more elegant solution?
  • tuxfool - Friday, September 29, 2017 - link

    Copying the Chromecast
  • HStewart - Friday, September 29, 2017 - link

Usually one will place a cable and leave on TV table or such - a lot depends on where you mount it.

It looks bigger than it is in the pictures, dimensions are 2.6 inches. Seems similar to the Chromecast.

Who cares if it hangs. You probably can't see it and it takes up less space this way.

So a cable box for Amazon. Sad to see them abandon ambition with their TV platform.
  • AnnonymousCoward - Saturday, September 30, 2017 - link

What ambition was that? Is your reasoning because they took off USB?
  • sparkuss - Friday, September 29, 2017 - link

No more Ethernet. That is the only input I wanted to use with my Amazon Prime account.

Are the previous versions ever going to be unusable just due to the components?
  • sparkuss - Friday, September 29, 2017 - link

Never mind, I found the adapter link. But I don't care for Alexa so I may still buy the older version before the stop making them.

Guys are you sure that this is the Fire TV? Looks like Fire TV 4k STICK 2017 edition. The specs/form factor do not make sense otherwise.
  • jabber - Friday, September 29, 2017 - link

Yeah I'm not keen on the form factor. I prefer the style of my original 2014 Fire TV. I might buy a 4K box version if this is the way its going.

I've got three of the 2015 Fire TV devices and they support 4K. Seems like we are not moving forward. Hopefully, Amazon will come out with a non dangling full featured version.
  • solipsism - Friday, September 29, 2017 - link

There are some decent aspects but no GigE, only 8 GB NAND, on 12-bit color for Dolby Vision, an external PSU, and that odd hanging design all seem like odd choices to me. Does it at least include an adhesive pad so you can mount the device behind your TV?

Just a reminder! Your Playstation can run Netflix, Amazon, and a few other streaming apps, as well as plain H264 files.

Is there any benefit for people who already have a smart TV with the Amazon Video app?
  • AnnonymousCoward - Saturday, September 30, 2017 - link

Smart TVs vary. Some run really slowly. It probably lacks the voice search. The Fire UI has all the Amazon stuff in 1 place and it's fast and polished.

Link at the end says "Apple", should be Amazon:
"Amazon has begun to take pre-orders on the new Fire TV. The unit costs $69.99 if bought separately and $79.99 when acquired with an Amazon Echo Dot.

Buy Apple Fire TV 2017 on Amazon.com

Amazon can't compete so easily with Apple Tv in this field, as Apple uses famous Siri in its Apple tv and Amazon's Alexa is not that famous. The remote controls for Apple TV and Fire TV have microphones, but Apple's has sensors in it so you can use it as a game controller. Moreover you can get help anytime via Apple TV Customer Service Number.

I brought this 3rd Gen Fire TV but it's not working in India. when investigated, in amazon site they mentioned in India they support only 2nd Gen Fire Stick. I even tried with my login credentials. it's not playing the US and India content. Does anyone have any idea to fix it?

Simply a prompt! Your own Playstation may run Netflix, Amazon, and some other streaming apps, and also basic H264 files. https://firestickremote.com
